This is a good thing since they replenish their numbers by spawning baby Beefalo, but it also means you can't go anywhere near the Beefalo unless you have the Beefalo Hat, which is crafted from Beefalo wool, a Beefalo horn and silk. Beefalo in heat can be identified by different bellows and animations, as well as a red spot on their rumps when they turn around.
If you're running the DLC Reign of Giants, they're guaranteed to go into heat and stay there until the start of summer, although it will happen at odd times throughout the rest of the seasons. However, one should be careful as beefalo in heat will tear a spider den down to nothing in their heightened aggression. Even better, unlike with pigs, Beefalo will leave any meat alone, leaving plenty of food for you as well. The spiders will aggro when a beefalo steps on the webbing and attack, which results in retaliation from the Beefalo and then the spiders, which once again results in a nice pile of loot for the player. This works for spiders and makes for an easy way to farm spider loot-take spider eggs and plant them near some Beefalo.
